Hey readers, I have a request for you. I was recently given the privilege of spending $75 on Amazon (!!!!!) and, while I have a longish list of books that I would like to buy, I thought I would take the opportunity to instead ask all y'all for your recommendations. So, please, state your case-- what possibly obscure, previously-unknown-to-me books (not that you know which books I do and don't know....), should I buy, and why?

"The Day of the Locust" by Nathanael West. Make sure you get the New Directions Paperback edition. You'll also get "Miss Lonelyhearts," which is superb.
The Recognitions by William Gaddis will systematically eat you alive you if you buy it and read it. dont do it unless you want to be eaten alive.
the good benefit is that if you read it, you are automatically not a sophist. and who wants to be a sophist?
Oh yeah, and West's Homer Simpson is actually funnier than Groening's.
Everyone should own a good copy of Moby Dick.
Yeah, AZF and I are reading Moby Dick together this fall so that is taken care of. She really wants me to buy this horribly heavy copy that she has but don't tell her I got a different one...
I am appreciating all suggestions so far. I have a nice Miss Lonelyhearts but like the Day of the Locust suggestion.

also if you harbor any bitterness toward the beat generation then The Recognitions is for you. The Recognitions do not like the beats.
