What are you eating?

AZF and I made a recent book purchase that I have been reading in free moments throughout the past four days. It's called What To Eat. It cuts through all the fat and tells you what's what (cuts the fat, come on). I've been thinking more and more about what we eat and what the consequences of those decisions are. It's not as much a hippification of dietary habits so much as, seriously, is it really hard to just be healthier and more aware? It's like the environment. Even if the world will not be destroyed by global warming, what's the big deal with treating the earth better? Same with food. There is no negative impact in learning a little more and doing things a little better. The opposite, however, we know has such negative impacts. And the 35 billions pounds of chicken breasts this country eats annually can't be helping our hearts.
(this is probably the most political I will ever be able to get on Luminous, so I'm taking it.)

the american heart assocation has studied the meats in the markets, and a heavy diet of chicken was the worst (in comparison to fish, beef, pork). no one believes this, though, somehow chicken has become the healthy choice. often it is the least healthy meat in the market. part of this is due to the fact that chickens are raised mostly off of the scraps of other animals, usually dead chickens and sheep. they live in and eat chicken shit constantly and die prematurely from sicknesses before they treat them and sell them.
but i guess heart isn't so much the problem as the fats and chemicals with which they are treated. treatment of chickens begins when they are being raised, they are often filled with god knows what. then they die. After cooking the meat releases Heterocyclic Amines (google that term and you'll see why that's not good) in levels fifteen times higher than beef or pork. then comes tumorous or pus-filled meat (you've all bitten into that at least once, probably at mcdonalds).
and the skin on store bought chicken, oh, man.
i can produce the sources for this if you want.

anyway. i love chicken. we eat it all the time. but it's bad for the heart. all i'm saying.

Vegans Sentenced in Baby's Death

By GREG BLUESTEIN
Associated Press Writer

May 9, 2007, 9:10 AM CDT

ATLANTA -- A vegan couple was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison for the death of their malnourished 6-week-old baby boy, who was fed a diet largely consisting of soy milk and apple juice.

Superior Court Judge L.A. McConnell imposed the sentences on Jade Sanders, 27, and Lamont Thomas, 31. Their son, Crown Shakur, weighed just 3 1/2 pounds when he died of starvation on April 25, 2004.

The couple was found guilty May 2 of malice murder, felony murder, involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children. A jury deliberated about seven hours before returning the guilty verdicts.

Defense lawyers said the first-time parents did the best they could while adhering to the lifestyle of vegans, who typically use no animal products. They said Sanders and Thomas did not realize the baby, who was born at home, was in danger until minutes before he died.

From the article:

"They’re not vegans. They’re baby-killers."
