For those of you who ran out and read "Under The Banner of Heaven" after I raved about in on the blog (who am I kidding?) you will be happy to celebrate the capture of Warren Jeffs with the rest of who are flabbergasted by the actions of this man. Sadly, my pessimistic self doubts this will make a big difference in the community, but who knows, I would love to be wrong. At least there is one less person out there who is promoting this behavior.

I saw an interview with Jon Krakauer this morning on Good Morning America on Jeffs. He said they really have to legalize polygamy to get the underage marriages to stop. That way, folks in the FCLS would be able to speak out without fear of legal retribution.
interesting stuff. what should one do? legalize polygamy if it would stop the abuse of 13 year olds? but then polygamy is legal. yikes.
What scares me about that theory, thought I'm not opposed to it, is that likely the delay on these girls being married off is only a mere five years. While they are older and legally can make these decissions for themselves, it seems that the brain washing wouldn't end. But five years of not being raped by your grandpa or your dads good buddy is probaly a much needed first step.
